FTP is the common procedure used for downloading (receiving) and uploading (sending) files over the Internet. With FTP you can log in to another Internet site and download or upload files-that's the "transfer" part of FTP.
FTP has been one of the earliest services of the Internet. At the beginning FTP was based on text commands from a UNIX prompt to transfer files efficiently and effortlessly. However, this has changed over the last few years. Now we are able to download files or images from any computers using easy to use GUI FTP software packages.
